Podcast Sheds More Light on Cheryl’s Descent into Dementia
I’d never heard of Greg Gerber when mutual acquaintance Ben Killoy reached out earlier this year and suggested he could put Gerber in touch with me.
Gerber is a former Wisconsinite now living in Arizona. More importantly, he hosts a podcast called “Forward From 50.” We spoke for an hour by phone when he was here in Janesville, Wisconsin, a few months ago. A few weeks ago, we sat down to chat by computer Zoom while he recorded my experiences of caring for my wife, Cheryl, as she descended into dementia for ten years and then died of Alzheimer’s on Feb. 25, 2024.
That conversation resulted in Gerber’s podcast number 151, one he’s calling “Rebuilding After a Dementia Loss.”
The podcast is 45 minutes long, and you can check it out here. Greg Peck describes rebuilding his life following his wife’s dementia in Episode 151 - Forward From 50
I hope all of you do take time to listen to it. Gerber afforded me plenty of time to explain some the ordeals I went through with Cheryl. He offered empathy, understanding what experts term “ambiguous loss”—how as a caregiver I was mourning even while Cheryl was still alive and dementia put a stranglehold on our lifestyle. Also, Gerber allowed me to share advice that might help others cope with such caregiving situations.
In his introduction to this podcast, Gerber offered key takeaways from our conversation.
“First, Greg explained how caregiving reshaped his marriage and required constant adaptation as Cheryl’s abilities declined.
“Second, Greg described how bicycling, nature photography, and journaling became essential tools for stress relief, emotional processing, and healing.
“Finally, Greg shared how writing weekly Substack reflections has allowed him to help others facing dementia, caregiving challenges, and widowhood.
“Greg’s story is a good reminder that meaning and purpose can grow even in seasons of loss. Caring for his wife taught Greg to adapt, stay patient, and build a strong support network.”
I hope that by sharing my story on Greg Gerber’s “Forward From 50” podcast, others might learn about my free Substack columns and join the more than 250 subscribers who appreciate these weekly offerings. After all, if I have any hope of finding a publisher and turning into a book the journal I kept during Cheryl’s decline, the more people I can connect with on Substack, the better.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week, I’ll close by again saying how thankful I am to each and every one of you for reading and following along!

I hope you and your family have a good Thanksgiving Holiday.
